Hate Crime is when someone deliberately victimises you because of your age, colour, race, gender, religion, sexual identity, social class or disability. A hate crime can cause harm to you and your family, friends and the local community: it is not acceptable.

  • If you have experienced verbal or physical abuse because of who you are or because of who the attacker thinks you are, it can be extremely frightening.
  • If it happens at work it can be difficult to talk openly with colleagues or employers.
  • If it happens at home it can be difficult to let anyone know that this is happening.

Such crimes often go unreported, particularly if people have concerns that it will happen again. If you do choose to report the crime, sometimes people can find dealing with the criminal justice agencies confusing and upsetting, especially if the case goes to court.

Victim Support understands all these concerns. We know that people who experience hate crime may have particular needs and concerns, especially if they suffer it repeatedly. We can help.

Our trained volunteers and staff can:

  • Provide you with information about the criminal justice system and support you through the process.
  • Put you in touch with other agencies who can help.
  • Assist you with claims for criminal injuries compensation.

All our services are free and confidential whether you have reported the crime to the police or not. Call us on the number below or find your local service under Victim Support in the telephone directory.
